First unveiled in 1990, the Toyota Previa is a minivan that initially set the standard for future technologies in the multi-purpose vehicle. The first generation featured a single sliding side door for backseat passengers. It also had a mid-engine platform which allowed for easy access to the spark plugs and an even front/rear weight distribution which significantly improved ride quality and handling. The first version of the Toyota Previa was long and wide, with two smaller versions released in Japan. The minivan was available in rear and all-wheel drive variants and utilized a 4-cylinder 2.4 liter engine. The Toyota Previa could be purchased with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. The Toyota Previa also had the ability to seat up to eight passengers and featured three different seating configurations. In 2000, the second generation was unveiled and featured a newly designed front-wheel drive system. The wheelbase was slightly longer, more narrow and lower than the initial version. The newer Previa was designed with passenger doors on both sides and room for up to eight passengers. The second version of the Toyota Previa was available with both gasoline and diesel-powered engines in the European market.
