In 2004 GMC introduced the Envoy XUV with room for up to five passengers. It was hailed as the perfect combination of an SUV and a pickup truck, but it also had a retractable rear roof section so that it could have an open top load area. The area for cargo was made entirely waterproof and had a drainage system too, yet the fact that it could be fully closed and sealed meant it had an advantage over the open top trucks. The midgate that shuts off the passenger area to the cargo area has also drawn similarities to the GMC Terracross concept SUV.
