In 2004 GMC introduced the Envoy XUV with room for up to five passengers. It was hailed as the perfect combination of an SUV and a pickup truck, but it also had a retractable rear roof section so that it could have an open top load area. The area for cargo was made entirely waterproof and had a drainage system too, yet the fact that it could be fully closed and sealed meant it had an advantage over the open top trucks. There were problems reported, however. Mainly, the cargo bed area was a lot shorter and also the side glass was more breakable. The idea for the retractable roof is similar to that of a 1960s model, Studebaker Wagonaire. The midgate that shuts off the passenger area to the cargo area has also drawn similarities to the GMC Terracross concept SUV.
