Production first began on the Toyota Paseo in 1991, and was vaguely based on the Toyota Tercel. The first model was available in a coupe-only version, with later models expanding to a convertible option as well. The first-generation Toyota Paseo consisted of a 1.5L E-series engine. The Toyota Paseo was available with either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. The second generation became available in 1995 and featured modernized electronic equipment. However, the most noticeable change was in the metal of the body. To reduce emission levels, the Toyota Paseo followed the same specifications required by the California CARB laws. The United Kingdom had three version of the Paseo: ST, Si and Limited Edition. The ST was the base model of the Paseo. Although middle of the road, the Si was much more advanced with the addition of 14-inch alloy wheels, colored boot spoiler, a Sony CD player and anti-lock brakes. The Limited Edition had all the Si features in addition to a color-keyed chin spoiler, aquamarine decals, mud guards and sporty 15-inch alloy wheels with low profile tires.
